Wines
are personalities
Wines are not just liquids, but have a story to tell and can
be compared with human beings. We created two young men (Frank
and Gelt), both of them representing very different personalities.

GELT
is
a hedonist, a calm and very sympathetic person, positive
thinking, smiling.
ZWEIGELT
CLASSIC 2008
Deep colour; multi-layered fruit play of black currant;
an offering full of fruity mellowness, gradually opens
up in the glass; soft and, at the same time, compact
with good aging potential.

FRANK
is
an aristocrat, sportsman, maybe a golfer or sailor.
Well dressed, slim, elegant.
BLAUFRÄNKISCH
CLASSIC 2008
Dark ruby-garnet; sappy and harmonious acid structure;
well balanced with ripe tannins.

THE
WINES |

Neckenmarkt
Wineries vinifies between 1.5 and two and 2 million litres
of wine every year, but up to the vintage 2000, only about
5% of the total volume of the company was bottled (the bulk
of production was sold in barrels to large trading companies).
These bottled wines are sold primarily ex-works and/or to
local restaurants:
Zweigelt classic GELT
Blaufränkisch classic FRANK
Blaufränkisch "8-grape"
Blaufränkisch "Himmelsthron" (barrel
ageing)
Via Romana (Cuvée of Blaufränkisch, Cabernet
Sauvignon and Zweigelt/Merlot; barrel ageing)
With
the vintage 2000, three new lines of wine entered the market,
which emphasize the quality potential of Neckenmarkt and help
define a repositioning of Neckenmarkt Wineries. The new wines
were vinified exclusively from grapes under the "8-grape
program", i.e., from vineyards that have been managed
on the basis of low yields for years.
 
In
the course of the renovation in 2003 the tasting room and
the steel tanks were modernised as well. .

The designations of the three new wines are in Latin and refer,
also in terms of design, to the Roman origin of domestic wine
culture as well as the first heyday of Neckenmarkt wine during
the Roman period:

THE
WINES IN DETAIL |

ZWEIGELT
CLASSIC has been aged in traditional manner. This
native and fine red wine is not affected by barrel but
matured in the steel tank.

BLAUFRÄNKISCH CLASSIC is similar to Zweigelt
Classic.
It is a full-flavoured and characteristical regional
wine, correlating to local soils.

BLAUFRÄNKISCH HOCHBERG and
ZWEIGELT HOCHBERG are produced exclusively from grape
material from the typical region.
These wines, aged in used barrels, are classified a shade
higher than the two mentioned before. |

MITTELBURGENLAND
DAC CLASSIC
VINIS UNITIS = ("through united wines")
is modelled along "viribus unitis" = "with
united forces", the motto of emperor Francis Joseph
I.
Vinis Unitis is a series of wines that is aimed at the
majority of domestic consumers. The goal was to create
three types of wine with different characteristics:
These three wines have very different tastes - they
are easy to distinguish by the name on the barrel label:
VINIS UNITIS ZWEIGELT and
VINIS UNITIS BLAUFRÄNKISCH-ZWEIGELT (Cuvée).
These traditional wines are unwooded.

TERRA
COGNITA = "known land" - modelled along
"terra incognita" (unknown land or territory,
unfamiliar area of expertise). This series comprises
two unmixed wines (Blaufränkisch, Zweigelt) from
the best vineyards of Neckenmarkt Wineries, with slight
use of wood ageing (barrel ageing in some cases).
These
wines, too, are destined for the food retail sector.

Above the other vineyards of Neckenmarkt the grape material
for the BLAUFRÄNKISCH HIMMELSTHRON is growing. The
excellent flavour of this wine is caused by the slate
flooring of the vineyard called "Himmelsthron"
as well as by the barrel aged ripening process of the
wine. |
Since Roman period Neckenmarkt is located at the famous
Amber Road ("Bernsteinstraße"), which
was the major traffic pathway between North Sea and
Mediterranean Sea. The Romans called this historic pathway
Via Romana. A famous name for an eminent
cuvée of Blaufränkisch, Cabernet Sauvignon
and Zweigelt.
Neckenmarkts cuvée VIA ROMANA is a blockbuster
not only for connoisseurs of barrel aged wine .

POTIO MAGICA, the "magic
potion" is the best and finest from the barrels
of Neckenmarkt Wineries. It is subject to a strict selection
process, and only a small amount is vinified - it is
reserved for select restaurants and more sophisticated
specialist shops.
The wine in question is a cuvée of Blaufränkisch,
Cabernet Sauvignon and Zweigelt - ripened in barrels
for 18 months.

VINTAGE
2008
The
vines started to sprout early on, thus resulting in an extremely
long vegetation period for the grapes, allowing them to achieve
high physiological ripeness. The summer was hot and very dry.
After a long dry spell, precipitation set in at the end of
July and supplied the vines with the necessary water. The
fall was beautiful, sunny and dry.
The harvest, in terms of quantity, was 15-20% below the average.
But the gradations were high. The grapes yielded concentrated
wines - compact and complex.
